M&M Johnston – Est 1933We are a family owned and operated Perth business. M&M Johnston began in 1933 by two sisters Margaret and Myrtle Johnston manufacturing ladies and gentlemen's clothing. For 55 years manufacturing from the corner of King and Wellington Streets, Perth. During World War II, M&M Johnston was asked to supply part of the Australian Army uniforms. Supplying these uniforms meant that M&M Johnston required expansion and soon over 60 employers were making uniforms to meet the army's demand. After the war ended M&M Johnston continued to supply army uniforms. In 1970 both the sisters retired leaving the business to their nephew Malcolm Johnston and his wife Stephanie. Malcolm having finished his masters in tailoring in 1951 and Stephanie a specialist in embroidery started working there in 1952.This winning combination continued in the city enjoying many loyal customers over the years. Supplying WA Police, Army, Navy, St Johns Ambulance, Qantas, band uniforms and private school blazers and uniforms. Anything that was a challenge Malcolm Johnston could do. In 1988 the business moved out of the city to Morley and continued to manufacturer and embroidery in these new premises. In the 90's the import of many uniforms to Australia from Asia saw the manufacturing side of the business decline. High wages and clothing unions meant M&M Johnston could not continue to support West Australian manufacturing of clothing and had to let go of many dedicated staff some of who had been with the business for over 30 years. In 2000 M&M Johnston changed structure and relocated to smaller premises in Russell Street, Morley. Malcolm Johnston continued with contract work and Stephanie with embroidery. In 2003 Malcolm and Stephanie retired leaving the business to their daughters Kim and Robyn.Since 2003 Kim and Robyn have continued the family business in supplying Perth schools and business with quality embroidery and uniforms. Though the business has gone through many changes over the years one thing remains and that is service, quality and reliability.
